1963

23 August 1963: First meeting held to form an Organization in Bombay (Mumbai) to build a befitting memorial for Sree Narayana Guru and to propagate Guru’s Teachings. Venue: Residence of Mr.P. Sucheendran at Chembur. .

Shri. N.A. Bharathan chaired the meeting.

A Committee of three people,(P. Sucheendran, N.A Bharathan and O.K. Madhavan) was formed to give shape to the organization (contacting interested people, writing constitution, objectives and bye-laws)

Further meetings were held on 22/09/63, 06/10/63 and 3/11/63 at Tilak Nagar open stage. Several interested people participated in these meetings.

Drafts of constitution and bye-laws were finalized. (Drafting done by Shri.N.A.Bharathan) Decided to call a general body meeting on 17/11/63.

17/11/1963: First Official meeting of the proposed Organization was held at Poddar College, Matunga.

Presided over by Shri. Muliyil Karuvan who was elected as the founder President.

About 500 people participated. Constitution and Bye-laws were adopted.

Objective of the Organization: Establishing educational institutions, Community Hall, Gurumandiram in Bombay (Mumbai)

Also decided to establish 20 Regional units in and around Mumbai.

Provided for ten Office bearers (President, Chairman, Vice-president, General Secretary, Treasurer, and five joint secretaries in charge of five regional units each) 20 Unit Member in charge (presently Unit Secretary) and 4- 5 Council members in each unit (presently 6 Council members per unit).

General Council comprising office Bearers (OB) Unit Members in charge (presently Unit Secretary) and Council members with full powers.

Board of Management consisting OBs and Unit Member in charge (presently Unit Secretary) with limited powers. At present SNMS Patrons (inducted later) are also included in the Board of Management.

Sree Narayana Mandira Samiti (SNMS) was adopted as the name of the Organization at the first meeting of 17/11/1963. The meeting also unanimously agreed on the names of first set Office Bearers, Unit Members in charge (Unit Secretary) and Council Members.

SNMS got Registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 (BOM 44/64 dated 8.04.1964) and under Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950 (F-1185 Bom dated 13.07.1964).

Membership drive for enrollment of Life Members (Fee: Min. Rs. 5)

President Shri. Karuven dies (2.02.1964)

Patronship introduced in SNMS on payment of Rs. 5000. Shri. K. Somasundaram enrolled as the first Patron on 31.12.1964.


1965

Shri. Bankey Agrawal took over as President (January 1965).

Constitution (Bye-Laws) suitably amended to enlarge the scope of social service activities and to attract large scale donations, and to avail of income tax exemption to such donations. The amendments were drafted by Shri. M.R. Narayanan.


1966

6 March 1966: First Anniversary of SNMS celebrated.

23.10.1966: First SNMS Office was purchased and inaugurated at Navin Asha Building, 126 dada Saheb Phalke Road, Dadar, Bombay 400014 (Registered Office).

First Gurru Mandiram established in the office premises

Prepared plans to acquire a plot of land to start an English Medium School and support facilities in a backward area to benefit the children from poor families

Decided to celebrate Guru Jayanthi (Chathayam day) and SNMS Anniversary in a grand scale every year and to publish souvenirs.

Fund raising drive started.


1967-71

01.01.1967: Reading room established at Dadar office with 35 news papers and periodicals (English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarathi, Malayalam)

1968: Expanded Dadar office with purchase of adjoining shop.

SNMS got income tax exemption under Sec. 80G of IT Act with effect from 1/04/1968 (PAN No. AACTS1177L).


1972-74

Purchased 14300 sq. yard of marshy land at Chembur for starting the educational complex.

Only 6300 sq. yards was permitted by BMC to be used for educational purpose.

Rest of the land was sold to Atomica Cooperative Hopusing Society (formed by staff of BARC at the initiative of Dr. K.K. Damodaran) mainly to finance the construction of school building.

07.10.1973: Foundation stone laid for school building by Shri N.K. Somani

January 1974: Construction started for school building, Community Hall and Guru Mandiram (Architect: Shri. Vyomakesan of M/s Studiarch).

Two more residential complexes (Sree Narayana Cooperative Housing Society and Chempazhanthi Cooperative Housing Society) surrounding the school area were promoted so as to facilitate transformation of the area into a residential locality and support SNMS activities.

Large scale fund raising drive to finance the cost of construction of educational complex. Several Donors and Patrons enrolled.


1975

June 1975: Ground floor and first floor of school building completed

July 1975: SNMS started its first school (Sree Narayana Guru High School) with two KG Divisions (120 students)

SNMS got Income tax registration certificate (NS/6287 dated 27.09.1975) with eligibility for exemption under Section 80 G of the IT Act with effect from 1.04.1968.


1976-79

Primary section of the school was approved by the Education Department (1979).


1981-82

Construction of Guru Mandiram and adjoining office completed

03.09.1982: Marble Statue of Sree Narayana Guru (donated by Shri. K.P. Balan) was installed at Guru Mandiram and consecrated on Chathayam day by Swami Geethananda, President of SNDST, Sivagiri..


1983

6500 sq. yards of adjoining land obtained on long lease from BMC was added to school premises as play ground.

Seminars and study classes on Guru's teachings started

Marriage Alliance Bureau established.

First Unit Office established at Goregaon (West): 20.03.1983.


1984

Construction of Community Hall with a capacity of 1000 people completed.


1986

SNMS started its first college (Sree Narayana Guru College of Commerce): Junior college and Degree College. FYJC and FYBCom.

First batch of SSC students from school passed out of SNGHS.

Second Floor of School / College Building completed.

Bhandup Unit Office was inaugurated (28.09.1986).

Kalyan Unit Office was inaugurated (14.12.1986).


1987

Construction of Second and Third floor of school / college building completed.

Ambernath Unit Office and Guru center was inaugurated (25.01.1987).


1988

Women’s Wing of SNMS formed.

Aruvippuram Prathishta Centinary was celebrated at Chembur complex (14.2.1988)

First batch of HSC students passed out of SNGC


1989

Silver Jubilee of SNMS celebrated (29,30 and 31 December 1989) .

First batch of BCom degree students passed out of SNGC

Thane Unit Office and Guru Center was inaugurated (10.12.1989)


1990

Dombivili Unit and Guru Center was inaugurated (10.06.1990)


1991

Organized a National seminar on life and teachings of Sree Narayana Guru. Eminent scholars like Justice K. Sukumaran, Prof. Nabeesa Ummal, Muni Narayana Prasad participated (01.12.1991).


1993

SNGCC became aided college.

Tarapur Unit inaugurated (5.02.1993).

Vasai Unit Office and Guru Center was inaugurated (7.03.1993).


1994

2800 sq.mtrs of land at Nerul (Navi Mumbai) purchased from CIDCO to start an international study center.


1995

Foundation stone laid for international study center (5.02.1995) by Swami Saswathikananda, President, and SNDST. The place was christened “Gurudevagiri”.

National seminar on Sree Narayana Guru and his teachings with participation of eminent scholars like Prof. M.K. Sanoo, Justice K. Sukumaran and Swami Saswathikanada (5.02.1995).

Inauguration of Powai Unit office and Guru center (10.12.1995).


1996

Introduced computer education in school.

Purchased additional land of 9602 sq. yards adjoining the Chembur premises

Construction of Gururdevagiri Project started (21.10.1996)

First Sports meet for members and families with about 600 participants (14.10.1996).


1997

Sakinaka Guru center was inaugurated (14/04/1997).

Purchased 3 Acres of land at Tarapur (26.09.1997)

Yoga classes introduced in school

Value education introduced in school as a separate subject.


1998

Marathi medium School started (June 1998)

2001

Three storey building structure at “Gurudevagiri'l completed for International Center for Sree Narayana Guru Studies along with two mandirams at the front dedicated to Lord Siva and Sree Narayana Guru. Guru Mandiram was donated by Shri. M.I. Damodaran, Siva Mandiram was donated by Shri. Sasi Damodaran and the First floor auditorium was donated by Shri. P.M. Bhaskaran in memory of his son Anandraj.

Consecration of the two temples at Gurudevagiri (11.02.2001).

Theerthadanam introduced on Prathista day every year.


2002

02.06.2002: Sree Narayana Guru Cooperative Bank Ltd. Started at Chembur with 4200 shareholders.

24.03.2002: Virar Unit inaugurated.

Guru prathishta at Kalyan Unit (23.08.2002).

02.10.2002: Organized All Religions Conference at Gurudevagiri. Scholars from various religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Zorashtrianism, Jainism and Sikhism) and religious philosophers presented papers. About 2000 participants.

Seminars on Guru’s Teachings and its universal relevance: Vashi (29.12.2002).

Started SNG Institute of Information Technology (June 2002).

Pre-primary Marathi School (Balwadi) started.


2003

2004

Ayurveda Dispensary started at Tarapur

“Holy Teeth” of Sree Narayana Guru was received and secured at Gurudevagiri complex

International Library established at Gurudevagiri with large collection of books on Sree Narayana Guru and his philosophy, vedic and other religious / philosophy books.

Organized the First Women's Conference at Chembur complex (25.07.2004). About 1000 women participated.

2005

Her Holiness Mata Amritananda Mai visited Gurudevagiri (7.02.2006).

Inauguration of Gurudevagiri International Center for Sree Narayana Guru studies by the former President of India Shri. K.R. Narayanan (12.02.2005).

Marathi Medium School got recognition from Education Department.

2009

Started Sree Narayana College of Education with BEd Course and DTEd course

Published books on Life and Teachings of Guru in English, Hindi and Marath.


2010

Aims and Objectives of SNMS in its Bye-laws amended so as to make its enrolled membership confined to south Indians in general, and keralites in particular, while retaining the nature of activities and services open to all general public.

SNGCC expanded with Self Financing courses (BSc-IT, BMS, BCom-Banking & Insurance)(July 2010).

Organized Global Convention on Universal brotherhood based on Guru’s teachings in Sri Lanka (19 &20 December 2010) jointly with Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust, Sivagiri and Sree Narayana Society of Sri Lanka.


2011

Seven day class on Janani Navaratna Manjari and Kali Natakam conducted by Dr. Geetha Suraj (April 2011).

24 Members participated Simla conference on Guru’s Philosophy (June 2011).

Shri. N. A. Bharathan, first General Secretary of SNMS dies (23.07.2011).

Silver Jubilee of SNGCC celebrated (30th July 2011). Maharashtra Governor H.E. Shri. K, Shankara Narayanan was the Chief Guest.

Self Finance courses BCom (Accountancy), BMM and Junior College science started in SNGCC (July 2011).

One week camp for children at Nerul (Gurudevagiri) on personality development conducted by Swami sudhi Chaitanya (30.10 to 04.11.2011).

The 90th birth anniversary of Founder Chairman, long time President and current President Emeritus, Dr. K.K. Damodaran was celebrated in a grand scale. Chief Minister of Kerala Shri. Oommen Channdy was the Chief Guest. About 3000 peaple from all walks of life attended the function and falicitated Dr. Damodaran (13.11.2011)

Organized Global seminar on Guru’s teachings with participation of eminent philosophers and thinkers at Kochi (12.11 to 16.11.2011).

Construction of Fourth floor of Gurudevgiri building completed.


2012

A Convention of Youth (mainly children of SNMS memebrs) was organized for the first time (29.01.2011). About 150 youngsters participated and gave shape to SNMS YUVA activities in SNMS.

Office Bearers and teachers participated in the National Seminar on Enlightenment through education conducted by Hyderabad university at Hyderabad (4 and feb. 2012).

Organized a Legal Services Conference with participation by Kerala Legal Services Authority and Maharashtra Legal Services Authority. Eminent persons from Judiciary (Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair) and the legal profession participated. Shri. Suresh Gopi, prominent Malayalam Cine Artist participated as Brand Ambassador for the Kerala Legal Services Authority (11.02.2012).

Pre-marriage counseling introduced and the first counseling session was held by experts (March 2012).

Construction of fourth storey of new college building at Chembur completed.

Consecration of Temple complex at Kurar (Malad East): 14 to 16 April 2012.

Mid day meal program was introduced for 1400 children of SNGHS(Marathi & English medium) with sponsorship by RCF.

A Kavi Sammelan (recitation of Poems by Malayalam poets) was organized as a measure of publicity for the international study center (21.10.2012).

Second Women's Conference organized at Chembur Complex on the theme of “Economic Independence of Women”. Shri.K.S. Money, IAS (Rtd), former Secretary General of National Human Rights Commission was the Chief Guest. About 1000 participants (9.12.2012).

Kalamboli Unit Office inaugurated (December 2912)

Inspection of SNGC by NAAC Team and confirmation of accreditation (August 2012).

A Perspective Plan (five year plan 2012-2017) was prepared and approved by the General Council giving direction to the future activities of the SNMS


2013

Law College started with IPR postgraduate diploma course (January 2013).

Free School uniform (two pairs each) was provided to 1400 school children with sponsorship from ONGC, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hemant Kothari Foundation (January 2013)

Freeship granted to 70 Marathi medium students (Feb. 2013).

12th Gurudevagiri Theerthadam and Prathishta anniversary (9, 10, 11 Feb. 2013).

49th Anniversary of SNMS and inauguration of Golden Jubilee Year 2013-14 (24 Feb. 2013).

Organised mock drill on “Firefighting & Evacuation” in collaboration with Mumbai Fire Brigade for school children in January.
